The biggest car manufacturer on the planet is releasing sales figures for 2017 – so who is the official number one?
Has Volkswagen in Germany pushed the 2016 figures to the top?
Or is it one of several new joint ventures involving car companies?
Maybe American giant general motors has hit back?
Answer: it depends on what the car manufacturer contains in its global sales figures. The key is how you define a car.
Claiming this year’s honor is a new player: the renault-nissan alliance.
The Japanese group acquired mitsubishi in 2016 and adopted its current name last September.
It consists of ten brands, including dacia, datson, infiniti and Renault. After the merger, the company said it sold 10.61 million passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in 2017, becoming the “no. 1 auto group in the world”.
But this is a bit confusing.
Why is that? Because Volkswagen says it sold 10.74 million cars in 2017 – some say the Numbers should be the world’s largest in the second year.
According to Anna Marie Baisden, head of automotive at BMI research in London, the study of who is the top dog in global car sales really depends on the rankings you want.
According to media reports, the 2017 renault-nissan alliance became the “largest sales volume of light vehicles” and put vw firmly in second place.
But the accounts exclude so-called heavy vehicles from the Volkswagen data.
Heavy vehicles usually mean big trucks and buses – which seems reasonable. They are obviously not cars.
But vw includes heavy vehicles in its global sales. So others put the Numbers on the surface and reported that German companies had retained their first crown before the renault-nissan alliance.
To add to the confusion, carmakers and countries have different definitions of light and heavy vehicles.

It depends on where you live and what brand you drive.
“Suvs have become so popular that many of them are basically the same as regular cars,” said Derryn Wong, editor of CarBuyer.
“But in the United States, some of the SUV is regarded as light trucks, in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, Toyota Hilux is a pickup truck or light commercial vehicles, and use the same platform and Toyota Fortuner look similar, but is considered to be the SUV – passenger cars.
“In short, it is very difficult to draw a line where the end of the passenger car and the light vehicle start,” he said.
But the fun doesn’t stop there.
For example, lorries are almost always treated as commercial vehicles unless they are minivans – just like the Toyota sienna can carry eight people.
Whether they are for commercial or private transportation, they can also rank light trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado.
“In order to break through the situation, you can extract manufacturers of passenger cars only defined data – but you have to do it every enterprise group and their brand,” huang said.
“But not every brand has announced a total sales distribution for 2017, and not every brand has a clear division of passenger cars and light vehicles.”
So what’s the answer?
Removing heavier trucks and buses from sales data will help you compare the light vehicle market, says Ms. Baisden of BMI.
“This may be more relevant to the average consumer, which is where we see the renault-nissan alliance climbing the rankings,” she said.
“The acquisition of mitsubishi in 2016 means that they now have more light vehicles, so they are going to be the top car of all brands, which is unthinkable.
“If, however, each brand is contained in a group, and sales of all types of vehicles, it will start to like the Volkswagen group company, the company has a small hatchback cars, Volkswagen and Seat and porsche all products, and reach the Man under the brand of big trucks. ”
